Speech therapy apps can be valuable adjuncts to treatment — extra practice between sessions, motivation for young clients, and data for the clinician. They can also be busywork with no clinical value. The difference is in how you evaluate them. Here is what to look for.
Clinical quality and fit
An app should serve a specific clinical goal, not just fill time:
- Targeted practice. Does it address the sound, language structure, or skill in the treatment plan?
- Adjustable difficulty. Can you set the level, stimulus set, and position to match the client?
- Evidence-informed design. Look for apps grounded in established approaches; be cautious of marketing claims that promise outcomes.
Engagement
Especially for children, engagement drives repetitions, and repetitions drive change. Good apps use clear visuals, immediate feedback, and reward structures that do not distract from the clinical task. Beware apps where the "game" overwhelms the practice.
Data and progress tracking
The most useful apps record performance — accuracy by sound or position, trends over time, and exportable reports. That data lets the clinician adjust the plan and demonstrate progress to families and payers.
Privacy and compliance
If an app collects any client information, privacy matters:
- Check the privacy policy for what is collected, stored, and shared.
- Prefer apps that allow offline or local use and avoid unnecessary data collection.
- For clinical use, ensure any identifiable data is handled consistently with your practice's privacy obligations.
When in doubt, use generic client identifiers rather than real names inside third-party apps.
How apps fit the larger plan
Apps supplement — they do not replace — therapy. Use them for distributed practice, then verify progress in session and document it in your notes with a DAP or SOAP template so the homework shows up in the record.
