Open toolWhy a wallet card works
In a crisis, working memory narrows and the client may not remember a phone number they rehearsed the day before. A wallet card makes the right contact visible without effort, which buys seconds and reduces escalation.
The card complements a written safety plan rather than replacing it. Pair the printed card with a Stanley-Brown safety plan and review both in session.
Use it alongside
- A written safety plan after a suicide risk assessment.
- Discharge planning from higher levels of care.
- Caregiver and family psychoeducation about when to escalate.
FAQ
Questions therapists ask before using this calculator
What is a crisis resource card?
A crisis resource card is a small, wallet-sized reference that lists the phone numbers and texts a client can use during a mental health crisis. The format keeps the most important contacts one glance away when coping skills are not enough.
Which crisis lines are always included?
The card always includes the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, Crisis Text Line (HOME to 741741), the Trevor Project for LGBTQ+ youth, and the Veterans Crisis Line. Therapists add their own practice contact and the client’s personal emergency contact.
Can I add local or regional crisis resources?
Yes. Use the optional local resource fields to add a county crisis line, mobile crisis unit, or residential program. The card adjusts automatically and keeps the layout print-ready.
How should the card be printed and carried?
Print on card stock, fold along the dashed center line, and laminate for durability. Most clients keep one in their wallet, one at home, and one with a trusted family member.
When is a crisis resource card appropriate?
It is useful after a suicide risk assessment, as part of a written safety plan, and for any client who has experienced a crisis episode. Review the card together in session and confirm the contact numbers are still current.
